How to Mix Music for Mascot Skits

Getting Your Music Ready

  1. Determine what type of music your skit calls for. Are you planning a mascot dance or a cheer to get the crowd going? The right music choice depends on your mascot character, the amount of time you have for your skit and any additional props you require. For a rally dance, consider music that will get the crowd pumped up. However, if your skit calls for a very specific genre of music, go with that instead.
  2. Add additional songs to your skit as you see fit. Perhaps your character will begin with a rambunctious routine but will then get sad and then will get rambunctious again once the crowd cheers. For this, you will want multiple music selections mixed together. Create a mix as a playlist in iTunes. Once you think you have all the songs that will fit your skit, practice with a run-through to make sure your routine matches up to the song or songs you choose.
  3. Put your song or playlist onto a CD or MP3 device. Based on the size of your audience, you may wish to hook up the device to speakers or use a CD player. Get a friend to help you and press play at the necessary time. For best results, test the speaker’s volume and any equalizer (e.g. bass or treble) options before the crowd arrives. This will help you determine if the mix needs additional volume or changes to its equalization.
  4. Give your device or CD to a sound operator if your routine will take place in a larger setting such as a stadium. Talk to the sound operator before the show and see if she will grant you a trial run. This will help you ascertain the overall mix of the music in a large setting. Work with the sound operator to adjust volume and equalization to match your mascot performance space.

How to Wear a Mascot Costume

Angelina ballerina-oisk

School mascots can rev up the crowd at any sporting event. Business mascots can generate immediate, inexpensive publicity beyond traditional advertising venues. Mascots draw attention and create excitement among almost any crowd. If you wear a mascot costume for a business or sporting event, you’re sure to get a great deal of attention. Make sure you do it safely.

Instructions

  1. Dress sparingly and for hot conditions. Mascot costumes, particularly those with full headgear, are very hot and sticky. Unless you’ll be outside in extremely cold weather, wear comfortable, loose fitting shorts with a tank top underneath.
  2. Hydrate yourself with water and snack on a few pretzels or potato chips before the event, especially in warm temperatures. Sweat causes you to lose water and sodium, which contributes to uncomfortable leg cramps and can make you feel faint. The salt provided by the snack infuses additional sodium into your system, and the water keeps dehydration at bay.
  3. Create a personal cooling system using two water bottles and plastic tubing. Chill the water bottles, then remove the caps. Drill a small hole in each cap. Remove the plastic shavings and replace the caps. Strap each bottle to a sock-protected ankle using Velcro straps. Insert one end of the tubing into the bottles and run the other end up to the neckline of the costume. Secure with safety pins. Sip cold water through the tubing to provide necessary hydration and cooling relief inside the mascot costume.
  4. Move cautiously at all times. Mascot headgear limits your visibility; a child can be standing at your feet and out of your field of vision.
  5. Stay in character while wearing your mascot costume. Move and act accordingly.
  6. Portray a friendly attitude at all times. The mascot is an icon, and poor behavior by the wearer can reflect negatively on the sports team or business it represents.

DIY mascot costume

mascot

this minion cost about $6 to make. I used white poster board, hot glue, foam, felt,  and jean. I made this for my son, he also wanted to be Sonic which you can find on this site too. The Sonic took my awhile, this costume only took a couple days and I let it dry overnight before decorating it.

Step 1: Step 1 Paper Mache Body

mascot-1

i used plastic chicken wire to make a form for the paper mache head. It would be easier to just use a large balloon. I used about 5 layers and let it dry over night. I then glued and taped white poster board to form the body. I cut the arm holes and let my son try it on. I ended up paper macheing the entire thing because the post board just wasn’t strong enough. Next time I will just use cardboard.

Step 2: Body

mascot-2

i used a foam noodle to add more structure to the bottom, but if you use cardboard you won’t have to do this step at all.

Step 3: Step 3 Yellow Fabric cover

mascot-3

i cut the hole in front for the eye. The eye and arms are so much easier to cut before you cover them with fabric. I used 1 yard of fabric between the body and the arms. I just the fabric into 4 sections and cut them at an angle to make a point at the top of each piece. Then I sewed them together all the way through and it should make somewhat of a dome shape. pulled the fabric over the body and glued at the bottom edge to secure. I then cut the fabric over the opening for the eye and glued it on the inside.

Step 4:Jean Jumper

I used a jean dress for the bibs. The fabric was lighter weight and didn’t need much but a trim at the bottom. I also made longer straps and then glued everything down.

How to Choreograph a Mascot Routine

Choreograph All Elements of Your Mascot Routine

  1. Make an exciting entrance. Whether you usher the team onto the court or playing field, warm up the crowd before the team appears or arrive on the sidelines just as the game begins, you should work out an entrance routine that will make the crowd excited to see you. Now is a good time to bust out some acrobatic moves, but don’t expend too much of your energy right at the start. Remember, you’ve got a whole game to get through.
  2. Choreograph a dance routine to go with your school’s fight song. You might want to choreograph several different routines in differing styles so the crowd never knows what you’re going to do.
  3. Study choreography software and videos to get ideas that you can adapt to suit your mascot’s personality and abilities. Find instructional materials at DanceCheerNet.
  4. Celebrate every score with a great victory dance. The athletes aren’t supposed to do it, so you do it for them. You might want to develop different moves for easy scores, cliffhangers and game-ending scores.
  5. Work with the cheerleading squad to choreograph some joint routines. Talk to majorettes, twirlers, drill and dance team members, musicians in the marching band and other performers to get ideas as well.
  6. Work with the band. Choreographed routines gain extra excitement from having the music performed live rather than simply playing a CD.

How to Choose a School Mascot

Your school may be new and choosing a mascot for the first time, or perhaps your school wants to choose a new mascot to update its image. Since your mascot represents your school at athletic events and other functions, you’ll want to consider your choice carefully.

Choose a Mascot to Represent Your School

  1. Choose a mascot that represents the fighting spirit of your team. Mascots are often anthropomorphized predatory animals, such as bears, wolves, tigers or sharks.
  2. Choose a mascot that is identified with a characteristic of your region. Rowdy, the mascot of the Dallas Cowboys, is one example, as is the Colonial mascot of the New England Patriots.
  3. Select a mascot that represents a human character who expresses power, such as a king, a gladiator or a wizard.
  4. Turn to history for mascot ideas. The mascot of the University of Massachusetts is the Minuteman. Other possibilities include a Trojan, Spartan, Roughrider or barbarian.
  5. Have fun with a cute mascot. Since the mascot’s duty is to engage the crowd and stir up energy, funny characters such as rabbits, dogs or cartoon-type creatures are very effective.
  6. Be aware that in recent years, ironic mascots such as the University of California Banana Slug have become very popular.
